SIGNS & SYMPTOMS of substance abuse

Know what to look for

Recognize the Signs & Symptoms of Substance Abuse

Parents, if you suspect that your child may be using substances there are a number of warning signs and symptoms to look for such as:
  • Sudden changes in personality, mood or behavior
  • Withdrawn from family and friends
  • Missing school
  • Sudden drop in school grades
  • Behavioral issues or getting into trouble at school, at home, with the law
  • Changes in personal hygiene
  • Lack of concentration or problems with memory

In addition to these signs and symptoms, parents should also consider what their child may potentially have hidden in their room.

Please click here to view our Mock Bedroom – “Hidden in Plain Sight” display.
Also be aware of references in your child’s room or logos on clothes, etc. that make reference to the drug culture.  For example, 420 is a known reference for using marijuana.  Parents should also be aware that there are many devices and items that look like everyday things but are disguises for hiding substances and paraphernalia. Please see these photos below for photos of some of these items that can easily be found on the Internet.

What to do if you suspect your child is using substances:
  • Pick an appropriate time to have a private, uninterrupted conversation with your child
  • Don’t accuse them but rather, let them know you are concerned
  • Explain what you have noticed or witnessed
  • Expect a strong reaction from them, likely in the form of anger or denial
  • Don’t lose your composure, remain calm and focused
  • Let them know how much you care about them
  • Talk to them about the potential harms of substance use
  • Seek outside help from an expert such as a trusted physician or school counselor
