Media literacy

Because knowledge is key.

Media Literacy

Your children are constantly bombarded on a daily basis by media messages and images from TV commercials to ads on social media, and even advertising in stores.  Most youth today spend many hours exposed to media from TV to Internet and the various social media platforms that they may be using.  Please see below for some helpful tips for guiding your child through a safe media experience.

  • Take the opportunity for creating teachable moments and talk to your children about the media messages and images that they are exposed to.
  • Talk to them about Internet safety such as not sharing passwords or other personal information online and how to adjust privacy settings on their media devices and social media platforms.
  • Explain to them that even with security safeguards in place, nothing on the Internet is truly secure or private.
  • Explain to them that not everyone on the Internet is who they appear to be and to avoid contact online with people that they don’t know.
  • Talk to your children about seeking out information on the Internet from reliable sources.  The Internet is full of content and information that can be inaccurate or misleading.
  • Talk with your child about what they are doing on the Internet.
