The Importance of Constant Communication

Healthy Cattaraugus County wants to keep our Community Talking about Underage Drinking Prevention!  Although our Town Hall meeting has passed, we want to keep the conversation going and make sure you are informed!

There are so many things that can happen to youth who use alcohol such as:
  • Alcohol can have lasting effects on youth brain development, especially the parts of the brain that control learning and memory.
  • Alcohol impairs youth ability to make good decisions, which puts them at greater risk for being in dangerous situations.
  • Youth are at an increased risk for developing an alcohol use disorder.
  • Youth who use alcohol are at risk for developing anxiety and depression.
  •  Not only does youth alcohol use effect the brain, but it also effects the body as well. They can experience damage to the heart and liver, have poor bone development and muscle loss.

What can parents do to prevent youth from using alcohol?
Establish clear rules about “no drinking”
  • Talk with your teens early and often
  • Teach them how to say “No”

And don’t forget:
  • Providing alcohol to minors is ILLEGAL!
  • You could face a fine of up to $1,000 or spend 1 year in jail if you give or sell alcohol to anyone under the age of 21
